Prime Minister Tanik Verwoerd

Introduction

Prime Minister Tanik Verwoerd was elected to his seat on 5 August, 2285, after three terms in Legislative Parliament as representative for Johannesburg. The child of a career politician and a political reporter, he was born and bred in the system of Azania's government.

Prime Minister Verwoerd has been a stabilizing influence throughout his term as Prime Minister, maintaining a steady voice of reason, cooperation, and progress in the sometimes tumultuous chamber of Parliament.

"I cannot imagine a world in which harsh words would carry the day over careful thought."

Prime Minister Verwoerd, the Man

Tanik Verwoerd was born in Johannesburg on 23 April, 2238. His father was Lucas Verwoerd, a political reporter for Azania-based Independent News Service. His mother was a longtime Polity Representative for the (politically-recognized) Transvaal Boers. Raised in the Azanian political system, he studied at the University of Johannesburg, taking degrees in Law and Political Studies. He spent his years before being elected to Parliament working as an assistant to the Chief Justice of the Azanian Supreme Court.

An intensely private man despite his somewhat public upbringing, Prime Minister Verwoerd rarely grants interviews to the press on any topic other than current events, although he has announced his intentions to write his memoirs in the next few years.

Prime Minister Verwoerd is a member of the (politically-recognized) Polity of the Johannesburg Public Servants, and has been elected to all his governmental terms under the auspices of the Vox Republica party.

"My life? I am not here to talk about my life. The good of Azania is the only topic of interest to me."

Prime Minister Verwoerd, the Leader

Prime Minister Verwoerd has proven to be an effective leader by example and by action.

His reasoned and thoughtful arguments have set the stage for many surprising advances in Parliamentary debate, and his knack for finding a middle ground acceptable to all parties has won him abiding support from the majority of Parliament members over his years of service. His presence in the Parliament chamber often restrains the more outspoken representatives, and he has been rarely known to raise his gavel in the course of a debate.

He has proven himself to be a man of bold and decisive action when he feels that the good of Azania is threatened, however. It was Prime Minister Verwoerd who first suspected Ezekiel Mogunde's corruption, and through his tireless pursuit of the facts, he laid bare the depth of Mogunde's crimes against Azania and the Azanian people.

Finally, it is through Prime Minister Verwoerd's efforts that the situations of the minority populations of Azania have been improved. He has worked closely with groups of whites, Muslims, Hindus, and citizens of mixed race to improve their representation in Azanian politics and government.

"There is no place for personal glory in the the service of our country. There is only duty."

The Future

Speculation has run rampant that Prime Minister Verwoerd will not run again for Prime Minister when his current term is up in 2306, although he has vehemently denied any and all suggestions to this effect in the past. Whether he leaves government or stays on in the service of his country, Tanik Verwoerd will have made a lasting mark on the history of Azania, Africa, and the world.

"Everything we do must look toward the future."
